Choosing a Size Before It Arrives
Most rugs that disappoint are not the wrong colour. They are 40 centimetres too small. A short method for getting it right on paper first.
Almost every rug that disappoints was chosen from a photograph and ordered one size down. The colour is usually right. The dimensions are usually not.
The fix is unglamorous: measure the seating area rather than the room, then decide how much of the furniture is meant to stand on the rug.
Three positions, and what each needs
All legs on. The whole seating group stands on the rug, with a margin around it. For a normal three-seat sofa with a chair, that means roughly 400 × 280 cm or larger. This is the most settled result and the most expensive one.
Front legs on. The sofa's front feet stand on the rug, the back feet on the floor. From about 200 × 150 cm upwards, depending on the sofa. This is the version most rooms actually need.
In front of the sofa. The rug sits under the coffee table only. It works, but the seating area stops being visually held together, so it suits a small room better than a large one.

If you are between two sizes, take the larger one. Nobody has ever regretted that.
Do it with tape first
Mark the outline on the floor with masking tape and leave it for a day. Walk around it, open the doors over it, put the coffee table inside it. A rug that looks generous on tape will look correct in wool, and a rug that already feels tight on tape will feel tighter once it has a sofa on it.
On every product page there is a scale drawing that places the size you have selected against a 220 cm sofa, a 110 × 60 cm coffee table and an 80 cm chair, and tells you which of the three positions it will give you.

Rooms that are not living rooms
Beside a bed, a rug does not need to hold a composition together. It needs to be the first thing your feet find, which is a question of depth of pile rather than of area. Small formats are the honest answer there, and they are inexpensive.
If you are still unsure, send us a photograph of the room with rough measurements. You will get a size back, and a reason for it.
